Biography
Wayne “PADE” Barnes
Wayne was born in 1964 in New York City and grew up on Little West 12th st. in the heart of the Meat-packing district , between the Village and Chelsea. He attended the United Nations International School during his high school years. He holds a degree in Psychology from Hunter College.
PADE is a self-taught artist who began writing graffiti in 1977.Being the son of Artist Joe Barnes, PADE was surrounded by art since birth. PADE’s artwork is heavily influenced by underground comics and the graffiti he grew up with and the everyday images of urban life growing up in the New York of the 70’s and 80’s. Some of these images he acquired spending countless hours in New Yorks Chinatown, eating, watching Kung-Fu movies and taking in the various artistic disciplines of the East. ( He went on to study Kung Fu and practices the art of Bagua.)
Early in his career PADE met Seen and his brother Mad in the train tunnel. He joined the ranks of the United Artists and did pieces with Seen on the 6 line. It was in 1979 when Pade and his then partner, REGAL-192, joined the Rolling Thunder Writers.Pade ended up becoming a major player within the RTW ranks in the early 80’s partnering with MIN-1 and later SACH, QUIK, IZ, KEL-139, RICH2 and BOE, to name a few. In the early 80’s RTW unleashed an all out take over of most of the New York City subway lines. PADE played a big part during this take over..
PADES graffiti work has been featured in Can Control magazine, At 149th street.com, Subwayoutlaws.com, and Dirtypilot.com among other places. He is also featured in the recent publication, “The History of American Graffiti “ by Roger Gastman, and Caleb Neelon.
Pade has shown his work in Beacon NY. He took part in the “Tales of the RTW” show on May 4th 2012 at Presents Gallery in Brooklyn. He also had the honor of showing in a group show “Painting Blackwith” his father, 91 years old today, at Pokim Gallery in 2015. He is featured in the new book “Uptown and Downtown” by Schiffer Publishing.
Today Pade resides in Thailand.
