Biography
Bom5 was born in the South Bronx and raised on 174th Street. He started out as 174 SPIDER and ran with the SAVAGE SKULL. He learned rocking from Hollywood, Mighty Moke, Chulo Snake and Tony Amore and eventually started his own Rocking crew called “WE ROCK”. He learned WILD STYLE through mentors BILLY 167 (RIP) and REPEL (Slick Inc.). BOM5 left the gang life and got into Hip-Hop thru Afrika Bambaataa’s first JAM ON UNITY and quickly started getting down with Zulu Nation. He learned to B-Boy and DJ. He got down with the Zulu Kings and the Rock Steady Crew which eventually lead to BOM5 creating his own B-Boy crew called “Ready to Rock”. BOM5 partnered with RIP7 and together were known as TWO TUFF BREAKERS. BOM5 launched MW (Mad Writers), his own graffiti crew with his brother BANEONE. More recently, BOM5 started his own clothing line BOMIN’ GEAR, a design company entitled “Mechanical Warfare”, and a program called “Off Tha Walls” to teach kids graffiti art in a positive way. He has worked for Coca-Cola doing graphic design and murals. In addition to these projects, BOM5 partnered with old school friend NAC143 to create MADHATN’, a company specializing in airbrushing and graffiti art on caps and clothing. He also lectures on life growing up in the burnt-down-Bronx and travels the globe spreading the love of Hip-Hop culture.
Rock Steady Crew
In 1977, Jimmy D and Jojo, both from the Bronx, launched The Rock Steady Crew. Modest beginnings but with a demand that will always characterize them: the Rock Steady Crew only accepts the best in its team. It’s up to the new contenders to artistically confront the members of the group to become part of it. A severe challenge that few of them won.
In 1979, when the wave b. boys began to run out of steam, Jimmy D brought Crazy Legs and Lenny Len into the Rock Steady Crew to give new artistic impetus to their project and it was from 1981 that the group’s notoriety was confirmed in Manhattan: Crazy Legs, Frosty Freeze, Take One, Little Crazy Legs are starting to make waves, they are scheduled at Lincoln Center. Afrika Bambaata soon after proclaimed them members of the Zulu Nation and their career quickly took an international turn.
Deeply attached to the roots of hip hop, RSC breakers readily criticize usurpers and constantly defend a non-violent philosophy of hip hop. Among their many projects is the creation of a Rock Steady Crew Foundation, a place of artistic learning.
With Zulu, Airforce Crew and the NYC Breakers, the Rock Steady Crew are the benchmark for old school breakdancing, so it is with great pleasure that
the A.M.I. opens its Logic Hip Hop 2001 set to them!
